In environmentally friendly packaging news, major supermarket chain Iceland have announced its commitments to become the UK’s first supermarket to officially offset it’s entire plastic footprint by introducing plastic neutral packaging.
With the major supermarket chain continuing to work towards it’s ultimate goal of becoming plastic free across it’s own label packaging, this means Iceland will be offsetting its remaining plastic footprint by recovering and recycling environmental and nature-bound waste plastic. This is a big win for environmentally friendly packaging.
The environmental and nature bound plastic packaging will be recovered and recycled by Seven Clean Seas, an independent partner certified with fully transparent standards and reporting.
An introduction to plastic neutral packaging
Okay, so what does it mean to be plastic neutral? Being plastic neutral means that for every amount of plastic created, a measured equivalent of plastic waste is recovered and removed from the environment through recycling and waste management experts. So it’s almost like the saying you put in what you get out.
It’s important to note that being plastic neutral isn’t the same as being plastic free. Being plastic free means you as a business do not use any plastic in your packaging whatsoever.
If you are looking to become plastic neutral as an ecommerce business for example, you can still continue to use plastic mailing bags to deliver your content, it just means that for every one manufactured, an equivalent is recovered and removed from the environment, so you are still reducing your eco-friendly footprint by implementing plastic neutral packaging.
