Plastic carrier bags have been under fire recently for their ‘lack’ of economically friendly properties.
Researches may have found the solution to plastic waste, including carrier bags. The wax worm caterpillar has been found to digest polyethylene.
Scientists accidentally came across this discovery, they noticed small holes in the plastic bags containing wax worm during another experiment. Further studies showed that the wax worms ate their way through plastic bags very quickly. Research also showed that not only did the worms eat the plastic, when digesting it they were chemically transforming it into Ethylene glycol.
There are years of investigation still to be carried out, which will hopefully allow us to fully understand the wax worm and their abilities. Elliott Packaging aim to keep you updated!
